Our Story

Worship and communion at The Church We Hope For

The Church We Hope For first began as a house church in Northeast Pasadena in January 2020. And the first thing we did together was share the table and eat a great, big pot of Nicaraguan Black Bean soup. We believe these simple, shared tables formed the foundation for our church at large.

As the pandemic forced us to pivot, we found our way in the Fall of 2020 toward launching as an online community, what we began to call our Zoom Living Rooms. We never could have imagined that this season of life together would foster such familia and cultivate such community among us. But our Sunday morning services online from Fall 2020 to Winter 2021 helped knit us together into the people we now are.

In our vision statement, we declare our desire to be a “Beloved Community”. This is language harkening back to the hopes and dreams of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His holy imagination envisioned a day when a people could come together in true oneness across beautiful diversity of all kinds. Our Beloved Community is made up of people both younger and older. Black, Brown, Asian American/ Pacific Islander, and White. We are Churched, De-churched, and Un-churched people. And we’re made up of peacemakers, reconcilers, and hope-bringers. Those with deep-rooted faith. And those with long, lingering doubts. But all of us come together to be people present in our local communities to live out the life, love, and justice of Jesus right where we are, just as we are.

At long last, in the Spring of 2022, we officially became a church that meets fully and weekly in person.

We worship together on Sundays at 4 PM at Pasadena Church of the Brethren at 1041 N. Altadena Dr. We invite you to join us as we continue to become – together – the people God has long been inviting us to be.
